Dear parents,
Mr. Curtin's Sixth Class organised the Christmas Fun Day on Tuesday and raised  €1100 (approx) which will go to three deserving causes selected by the children-one local, one national and one international.  Face painting, Lucky Dip, Santa, not to mention the thousands of home baked cakes and buns all added to the enjoyment of a memorable day. Thanks to all the boys and girls, Mr. Curtin, Mary Conway and everybody involved for their efforts.
The Christmas show 'Santa Goes to Ballytown' featuring children from First to Sixth took place in Ballybrown Church on Monday night. Great credit is due to Mrs Dillon and all the cast who have been rehearsing for this production. Many thanks to all who helped with costumes, transport, even sleigh construction!
A Table Quiz for pupils in 4th , 5th, and Sixth classes took place yesterday and was greatly enjoyed by all involved.. Over 100 children  took part. Thank you to the Parents Association for providing prizes.
Many parents are taking part in bagpacking in Tesco in Dooradoyle on Saturday .The Parents Association still need volunteers for bagpacking  duties between 12 noon and 2 p.m.. This is a great opportunity to make some money for school funds. Maybe there are some teenage past pupils who would help out. Please contact the school or any member of the Parents Committee.
School will close for all pupils tomorrow Friday at 12.30 p.m. and reopen on Monday January 7th., 2013.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very peaceful Christmas.

Note re e mail addresses

13-11-2012
Dear parents,
The school is currently engaging in self-evaluation as part of our Literacy and Numeracy Strategy. We wish to conduct a Parental Survey in the area of Maths. In an effort to reduce our use of paper we would like to carry this out electronically. Families with internet access and an active email address are asked to complete and return the slip below. A hard copy of the survey will be sent to parents without email addresses.
The school would also like to give parents the option of receiving the weekly Thursday note as an e mail. There would be a significant saving for the school and you will receive the note even if your child is absent. Please indicate below if you wish to avail of this option. There is no obligation on parents to switch if they are happy with the current arrangement.
Yours,
Joe Lyons,

School note November 22nd 2012

22-11-2012
Dear parents,
I wish to bring the following to your attention.
The Book Fair was a great success last week. I wish to thank the members of the Parents Association who gave generously of their time both during school hours and at night. Total sales came to €2,415.74. The school is entitled to purchase books to the value of  60% of this amount. This is of great benefit to all children in the school.
There has recently been an exceptionally high number of sick children in school. This contributes to spreading sickness. School is not the place for a child who is unwell.
Today, folk group 'The Twitters' gave three performances in school. Apart from enjoying a live performance, the children were treated to examples of vocal harmony, a variety of instruments, breathing techniques interspersed with traditional Irish songs with some Christmas songs thrown in. All in all, a most enjoyable day.
Well done to Aisling Laffey, Joanne Davoren and Tomás O Connor who all represented Limerick City in the Cumann na mBunscol competitions in UL last week.
If you wish to receive the Thursday note by e mail, please send in your e mail details to the school. The form may also be accessed on the school website.
The National Parents Council is hosting an information evening on Internet Safety & Cyberbullying in the South Court Hotel, Raheen on Wednesday next November 28th at 8 p.m.
Please see the reverse of this page for a note concerning Bagpacking on Saturday December 22nd.

11-10-2012

Dear parents,

A meeting for parents of children receiving First Holy Communion in 2013 will take place in the school Hall tonight at 8 p.m. It is very important that all families are represented.

Children in Second Class travelled to Curraghchase today to mark National Tree Day, 'Lá na gCrann'. On Monday, the pupils of Fifth and Sixth Classes were guests at Limerick Racecourse where they met jockey Andrew Mc Namara and trainer Michael Hourigan and learned about life in the horseracing industry.

Thank you to all the parents who park in the Church Car Park while building is going on beside the school. Your co- operation is greatly appreciated. A number of parents are parking in the yellow box directly in front of the school gate and in the Disabled area. Please leave these areas free at all times.

A Rag and Phone Day will take place on Friday October 26th. (the last day before Mid-term break) . A note from the Parents Association will issue nearer to the date.    There will be a Colours Day on Friday October 19th . All proceeds to the Parents Association.

School note October 4th

4-10-2012.

Dear parents,

Groundworks have begun on the Resource Centre next to the school. This is a particularly busy time and I appeal to all parents to be vigilant. In wet weather, visbility is a major difficulty. Bus and Disabled parking areas must be kept clear at all times. Please do not drop children in the Staff parking area as they may pass in front of, or behind, other traffic. Many parents are using the Church car park and this is a great help.

Today is All Ireland Poetry Day and every class in the school learned, read, or listened to poetry today. It was enjoyed by all. Already this year, over a hundred children composed poems for the Cuisle Poetry festival which takes place in Limerick on the weekend of October 12th to 14th.

Well done to our boys and girls Under 13 football teams who have both been in action this week. The boys will play Lisnagry NS tomorrow and Patrickswell on Tuesday. All our Cumann na mBunscol fixtures are on the school website www.ballybrownns.ie

Trials for the Limerick County Cross Country championships will take place tomorrow, Friday, in the school field straight after school.  This is open to boys and girls from Third to Sixth Classes.

The Parents Association will meet in the school on Monday next October 8th. at 8.30 p.m.

A meeting of parents of children making First Holy Communion next May will take place in the school on Thursday next October 11th at 8 p.m.

Parent Teacher meetings will take place on Wednesday November 21st and Thursday November 22nd between 3.15 p.m. and 6 p.m. More details closer to the date.

school note September 27th

Dear Parents,

I wish to bring the following to your attention.

Last Friday all pupils and staff attended a Mass for the start of the new school year in Ballybrown Church. Thanks to Fr. O Connor for all his help with the preparations and to Mrs Dillon and the members of the school choir who added greatly to the occasion.

The GAA season is in full swing. Last Saturday, our boys played in the Ard Scoil Rís hurling tournament, reaching the semi-final where they lost by one point to eventual winners Clonlara N.S.. However, we did have something to show for our efforts as we were runners-up in the Shield competition. It was a long day, beginning with registration at 9.15 a.m., but enjoyable for all concerned. Special thanks to Mr Lordan and Mr Hennessy who gave so generously of their time last Saturday.

Please check your child’s Homework Diary every night, Monday to Thursday. It is a good idea to sign the Homework Diary and check that homework is being done properly.

The Healthy Eating policy has been a great success for many years. A minority of pupils bring in chocolate, bars etc.  The sugar content of many ‘Health/ Cereal Bars’ is very high. It would be appreciated if everybody would stick to the suggested lunch of fruit, sandwich and water.

*Tomorrow is the closing date for the Allianz schools personal accident insurance.

**Credit Union for all classes will resume tomorrow morning in school.

I would like to express my gratitude to all the families for their Art & Craft/Photocopying contributions. All monies are spent on Art & Craft materials used in class and to defray the cost of photocopying. . If you have not yet paid this money, you can give it to Rosemarie in the school office any day between 9a.m. and 2p.m.

School note September 20th. 2012

20-9-2012.

Dear parents,

I wish to bring the following to your attention.

The starting date for the Community Centre/ Resource House is next Monday September 24th. This will have implications for the school in terms of parking. Approximately half of the car parking area currently used by parents will be taken over by the builder until the completion of the project. Entrance and exit will be through one opening, the opening nearest the school. There will be approximately 20 spaces available to parents. I would encourage parents to use the Church Car Park as much as possible. As the first few weeks will be very busy, parents are advised to exercise extreme caution. Representatives of the Community Council, Board of Management and Parents Association have met on a number of occasions to try to minimise hazards but ultimately responsibility lies with each and every parent to be extra mindful of children going to and from school. Please respect the need for Bus, Disabled and Staff parking.

All children will attend a special Mass for the opening of the school year in the Church tomorrow morning at 10.15 a.m.

I would like to express my gratitude to all the families for their Art & Craft/Photocopying contributions. If you have not yet paid this money, you can give it to Rosemarie in the school office any day between 9a.m. and 2p.m.

I have noticed a number of children arriving at school after 9.20 a.m. on a regular basis. This causes unnecessary disruption and I would urge parents to try to have children at school by 9.15 a.m.

Parents of Sixth Class are advised that application forms and information sheets relating to post-primary school were distributed today. Please read these carefully.

Finally, it is school policy to put relevant information about all school-related activities, including sports fixtures, on the school website www.ballybrownns.ie. Please check the website regularly.
