School note January 23rd 2014

23-1-2014.

Dear parents,

If you wish to enrol your child in Junior Infants for school year 2014-2015, please note that the closing date for applications is 3 p.m. tomorrow Friday January 24th. If you have children in the school already, it is still necessary to apply by the date above.

'Do This in Memory' programme: Mass for children who will be making their First Holy Communion this year will take place in Ballybrown Church on Saturday January 25th. at 8 p.m. All members of the choir are asked to attend at 7.45 p.m.  First Holy Communion takes place on Saturday May 24th. 2014.   Next week is Catholic Schools Week and a range of activities will take place in the school.

Clan Cluana Theatre Company will visit the school on Tuesday February 4th. to put on a performance of the story of Setanta for pupils from Second to Sixth Classes. €3 per child. Please give the money to your class teacher.

Healthy Eating: All of us are aware of the problems of childhood obesity and the implications in later life. We have been operating a very successful Healthy Eating policy in the school for many years now. It needs parental co-operation for success. Cereal bars, chocolate bars, even as 'treats' are not allowed. Fruit, sandwich, water are all a child needs. Nothing could be simpler, easier to prepare, healthier or cheaper. I urge all parents to put your child's health first.

Fourth Class are currently attending swimming classes in Askeaton Leisure Centre. The school is grateful to Michelle Waters and Brigid Leahy for giving of their time to accompany Mr Hodnett and the class.

At Assembly last week, I asked the children to remember one Golden Rule: 'Be Nice to Everyone.' I urge you to repeat this message.

Please check the school website www.ballybrownns.ie to keep yourself informed of upcoming events, including Community Games news.

School note January 16th 2014

16-1-2014.

Dear parents,

I wish to bring the following to your attention.

The children from First to Fourth classes visited University Concert Hall this week for a performance of 'Music in the Classroom' last Tuesday. It was enjoyed by all.

As we start another year, may I take the opportunity to remind drivers of the need for caution and vigilance in the area near the school. A number of near-accidents have occurred in the short time since we returned to school. Stopping a car in a line of traffic and allowing children to run unsupervised across a busy car park can only end in tragedy. At this time of year, visibility is always an issue. Parking is not allowed in the yellow box directly in front of the main gate. Please keep bus parking areas free.

Attendance: In the event of any pupil reaching a total of twenty days absence from school in a school year, I am required by law to make a report to the National Education Welfare Board. Parents are advised to be aware of this and to be mindful of their child's attendance record.

Congratulations to Robert Corby, a Junior Cert student in Salesian College, Pallaskenry who took part in the BT Young Scientist last week. Out of 2,000 entries, 550 were chosen to go forward for the exhibition this year. Both Robert & his class mate Adrian (Kildimo) did a project on a Pulse Oximeter. They won 1st prize in the Intermediate category in the Technology section. This was the 1st time that the Salesian Secondary College entered so they were delighted. Well done to all concerned.

Community Games: The annual talent competition will take place at the end of January - date and time to be confirmed.

Draughts has commenced again this year in the Resource Centre on Thursday nights from 7-8pm. We are hoping to pick the teams tonight to represent Ballybrown/Clarina in U10, U12 &U14's. We would like if all children that have being attending would come along tonight Thursday January 16th.

School note January 9th 2014

9-1-2014.

Dear parents,

I would like to welcome all pupils, staff and parents back to school after the Christmas break.

Staffing: Mrs Ivess is on maternity leave and is replaced by Ms Katie Gibbons. Mrs O Connor is also on maternity leave and is replaced by Ms Maeve Fehilly. Ms Joyce returns from maternity leave on January 20th. Mr Seán Linnane will fill in until then. Mrs Dillon is on sick leave and Ms Catherine Curtin will teach Second Class until Mrs Dillon's return.

Music in the Classroom takes place on Tuesday January 14th.  in the University Concert Hall. All pupils from First to Fourth Classes will attend this excellent event. Please put the money in an envelope with your child's name on it for the attention of the class teacher. The cost including bus, concert etc is €13 per child, the same as last year.

Fourth Class pupils have just started a six-week programme of swimming lessons in Askeaton Leisure Centre. This is a great opportunity for all pupils to learn a lifelong skill.

The closing date to have your child's name on the Enrolment List for Junior Infants in September 2013 is Friday January 24th. at 3 p.m. Please contact the school if you have not already done so. Letters to parents of prospective Junior Infants were posted today.

A meeting of the Parents Association will take place on Monday January 13th. at 8.30 p.m. in the school.

During the course of parent-teacher meetings, some parents expressed a desire for their child to repeat a class. Under Department of Education rules governing this issue, Circular 19/2011 makes reference to Circular 32/03 concerning retention of children in same class-

Section 2.3 states: 'Under the Department's policy, children should only be allowed to repeat a year for educational reasons and in exceptional circumstances.'

As we begin 2014, I ask parents to avail of the parking area available in the Resource Centre and in the Church grounds. Please keep the Staff parking area and the bus areas free. Please do not obstruct traffic or park in the yellow box at the gate.

Finally, I urge parents to ensure that your child's name is on all books, coats, fleeces etc.

Gach dea ghuí,
