School note February 27th 2014

27-2-2014.

Dear parents,

Tomorrow, Mr Curtin leaves us to take up his new position as Principal in Killoughteen NS. He has been a great asset to this school and will be sorely missed by all, pupils and staff alike. We wish him well in his new post. Mr Stephen Hodnett will take over from Mr Curtin in Sixth Class for the remainder of the school year.

On Tuesday, Pat Cannon, an Engineer from Vistakon in Castletroy, visited Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Classes as part of Engineers Week. Pat’s presentations were most interesting and opened the children’s eyes to the many aspects of engineering.

Today, two Third year students from Mary Immaculate College who have chosen PE as their speciality subject visited the Sixth classes to do classes in hip –hop dancing. This will continue for four weeks and is part of the school policy of nurturing and encouraging all the children’s talents.

Yesterday, the 2014 GAA began when the fourth class indoor hurling selection played in a blitz in Old Christians GAA club. It was enjoyed by all.

Ballybrown NS Parents Association are organising a Table Quiz on Friday March 28th at 8.30 p.m. in Ballybrown GAA club. To help us organise this fundraising event we would like a parent from each class in the school to attend a meeting on Monday March 3rd  @ 8:30 p.m. in the school hall.

Ballybrown GAA club: Under 10 hurling training resumes tomorrow Friday 28th. February from 5.30 p.m.  to 6.15 p.m. at the ball wall. Players need hurley, helmet and runners.

Ballybrown Camogie Club is having its much awaited sponsorship draw on Friday February 28th in the club house at 8:30pm. There will be music on the night and all are welcome.

School note February 18th 2014

18-2-2014.
Dear parents,
I wish to bring the following to your attention.
Like most homes in the parish, the school was without electricity from Wednesday lunchtime. Power did not return until midday on Friday. The school suffered some structural damage to the roof on Wednesday. I am most grateful to Mike McGregor and Bernard O Brien who secured the damaged section on Wednesday in dreadful conditions.
Welcome back to Mrs. Hanly who returned to school yesterday after maternity leave. Thanks to Mr.  Hodnett who did an excellent job in her absence.
Congratulations to all 42 Sixth Class pupils who have secured places in secondary schools of their choice.
Swimming was cancelled last Wednesday due to the storm but Fourth Class will complete their swimming programme tomorrow, Wednesday. Thank you to Brigid Leahy and Michelle Waters who accompanied Mr Hodnett and the class.
Tomorrow, Sixth Class will have a visit from History expert Melissa Shiels, who is employed by Heritage Ireland. Melissa will cover The Renaissance and The Norman periods, complete with costume. It promises to be a great experience.
Last week, Fifth and Sixth Classes visited UL as part of Science Week. Next week, Pat Cannon, an engineer with Vistakon, will visit the school as part of Engineers Week.
Yesterday evening, all teachers and Special Needs Assistants completed the final part of a four hour course on First Aid and Dealing with Critical Incidents
As notified already, school will be closed on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st February for midterm break.

School note February 6th 2014

6-2-2014

Dear parents,

You are reminded that school will be closed for midterm on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st of February.

The children in Fifth and Sixth Classes will attend an event in UL next Tuesday as part of Engineers Week. Air-mazing: Engineering the Future with Pneumatics is a show that combines live science demonstrations, an engaging multimedia presentation and lots of volunteer and audience interaction. This event also fulfils another condition in our efforts to receive a Discovery Science & Maths Excellence Award. During the first term, we had a visit from Exploration Dome, a mobile planetarium

The school choir is practising regularly in advance of Confirmation on April 3rd. Thanks to all the teachers involved in preparing the children for this Sacrament.

As part of our Green School efforts, I ask children to take home any uneaten food etc. This is an effort to reduce our landfill weights. Your co-operation is appreciated.

Congratulations to Mrs Ivess on the birth of her daughter on Monday.

Ballybrown Juvenile Club Registration Night will be held on Friday 7th February at 8:30 pm at the Clubhouse.  2014 Registration Fees are €20 for first child & €10 per child thereafter. Fee includes Club membership & insurance.
