School note May 28th

28-5-2015

Dear parents,

I wish to bring the following to your attention.

Yesterday, Mrs Hodgins and Mary Conway, accompanied by Emer Conroy and Barry Twomey from the Green Schools Committee, travelled to Cork to accept the school's third Green Flag. This represents the culmination of two year's work in the area of Water Conservation. Well done to all involved.

Today, our under 13 camogie team meet Milford NS in the final of the Limerick City Cumann na mBunscol competition. We wish them well.

New Infants: Parents of all Junior Infants starting in September 2015 will be invited to meet the class teacher on Tuesday June 9th and Wednesday June 10th. All parents will be notified in writing next week.

School tours: All classes are on school tour on Thursday June 11th. Please pay outstanding monies by tomorrow, Friday May 29th.

The school has a small number of hurling helmets available, all Medium size, at a bargain price of €30 each. First come, first served.

Yesterday, Munster rugby player Ciara Griffin, who is completing a Master's in Education,  finished a ten week stint with Mr Lordan's class. Ciara taught the skills of the game and also covered teamwork, discipline, healthy lifestyle and positive thinking. It was a most worthwhile experience.

Another school year is almost at an end. The school calendar for next year is on the reverse side of this page. Please keep carefully.

School will be closed all next week and reopen on Monday June 8th.

 21-5-2015

Dear parents,

I wish to bring the following to your attention.

Last Saturday, children from Second class received their First Holy Communion. The day was the culmination of a year's work in preparing for the sacrament. A special word of gratitude to Ms Day, Fr Cussen,  Monsignor Lane, the parents involved and the children who sang in the choir.

School tours: School tours are on Thursday June 11th. Please have monies in by Friday May 29th. Please note that monies will not be refunded to children who drop out of school tour after that date.

Yesterday, 50 children from this school took part in the Limerick City Sports in UL. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day. To make it even more enjoyable, the school came in First Place in the Boys' Schools category. Cathal Cusack accepted the trophy on behalf of the school. Thanks to Pauline Lowe and Áine O Sullivan who acted as stewards for the day.

This week, news reached the school that we had finished in First Place overall in Limerick in Mathletes and that we had achieved the highest average score per pupil.  Aaron Waldron, Fourth Class, and Kate Cusack, Sixth Class, received medals for individual excellence to join Maeve Curtin, Fifth Class, who was Top Student in Limerick. Well done to all concerned.

Today, at Assembly, winners in the Numero class leagues were presented with their prizes. Numero leagues were run from Second to Sixth class as part of the school's Numeracy strategy.  Mary Kate Leahy, Grace Noone, Seán Coughlan, Olivia Kearns and Luke O Connor were the class winners.

Today,  the under 13 hurling team captained by Luke O Connor played  in the Olo Shield final, defeating Patrickswell NS by 2-5 to 1-2. Congratulations to all involved. The under 13 camogie team meet Milford NS in the City final next Thursday May 28th at 12.50 p.m.in the Gaelic Grounds. All support welcome.

61 children from Third and Fourth classes received their PAWS certs today. These were awarded following completion of a six week course in swimming and water safety in Askeaton Leisure Centre.

Mr Sheehy's class hosted Assembly today and produced a very interesting presentation based on Food Dudes,  integrating it with a quiz on national flags.

Parents Association: The next  Recycling day is on  Friday 12th  June 2015.  Please have your bags of unwanted clothes, handbags, paired shoes etc in bags at the school by 9.15am that morning.   Many thanks in advance for your help.

School note May 14th 2015

14-5-2015.

Dear parents,

As we near the end of the school year, I received word today that the school has achieved First Place in Limerick in the Mathletes online challenge and First Place for average score per student. These are superb achievements and I commend all the children and their teachers on this success.

Book Rental: All children  from Second to Fifth classes have received a letter regarding the Book Rental Scheme for next school year. Seven books may be rented for €30, a fraction of the cost of buying them. The scheme will operate for children in Third to Sixth class only. A Book Rental system is not practical for the junior classes as so many of the books are workbooks and cannot be re-used.

The school will collect Book Rental fees this week only, i.e from Monday May 11th to Friday May 15th. All monies in by tomorrow.

The school will buy Bun Go Barr, Mathemagic and Reading Zone books for €15 in total next week, from May 18th to 20th inclusive if families are willing to sell those books.  All details are on the school website www.ballybrownns.ie.                 Special thanks to Mrs Dillon, who is coordinating this scheme.

First Holy Communion takes place on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. It is vital that choir members attend. A lot of hard work has gone into making this day special.

Limerick City Sports take place in UL next Wednesday May 20th. Our own School Sports Fun Day will take place on Thursday June 18th. weather permitting.

Congratulations to Aidan O Connor, Luke O Connor and Keith Punch who played on the Limerick City hurling team in the Mackey Cup which took place on Tuesday. Nicole Griffin and Cliodhna Hall played with the City camogie team in the Neville Cup yesterday.

Tuesday May 19th is Wear Your County Colours Day, an initiative to herald the start of summer and the GAA Championships. Children are invited to wear a GAA jersey to school or any green jersey. There is no money involved. Limerick play Clare in the Munster Senior hurling Championship in Thurles on Sunday May 24th and   we are delighted that Ballybrown NS will be well represented as Cliodhna Hall and Keith Punch have been chosen to play in the Primary Game at halftime.

School tours are on June 11th. for all classes. All details on the school website. Please pay your child's teacher.

A reminder that school is closed on Friday May 22nd as the school is used as a polling station.
